Position Description – Horticultural Therapy Program Coordinator.

What and when?
Come along to our working bee on Saturday 3 October from 8:30am to get the Food For All project cranking.

How and why?
Members will implement a circular mandala garden to serve as a living nursery for plants. This gives us an onsite source of things like (lemongrass, arrowroots and other plants) to propagate elsewhere.

The idea for a mandala garden came out of a recent workshop with Tim Lang to plan the Food For All project. The workshop will involve shaping the mandala and planting out with a variety of perenial and annual vegetables.

What to bring?
If you have access to any of the following, please bring them along.

Cuttings, small plants, tubers of:
comfrey
arrowroot
lemongrass
vetiver grass
yarrow
tansey

Seeds of:
vegies to grow over spring summer,
companion plants/flowers (marigolds, calendula, cosmos, marigolds etc)
green manure (lablab, cowpea etc)

Vegetable seedlings

Of course, don’t forget a hat, sunscreen and work clothes.

We have allocated a space approximately 50m x 30m & we have funding from DOCS Area Assistance Scheme to build & create a program.

What will the nursery look like?

What facilities will we need? (eg. igloo, watering system, shadehouses, workspaces, mother beds etc)

This Friday at the Community Garden the Mullumbimby Biodynamic group are meeting to make a Cow Pat Pit, which is used to enliven soils or for adding to compost heaps.

Please come along to help and learn. Your participation and a plate for a shared lunch would be very appreciated.

Please collect your egg shells as they also would be appreciated. There is a hessian bag hanging in the small shed to store them for future use. We need lots.

This is the first get together of the bodynamic pod. Kaye and others in the local BD community are keen to begin gardening together biodynamically and this is a great start.

We’ll meet at 9am and depending on whether our guest speaker makes it , finish around 1pm.

Hoping to see you there (in old clothes!) for some or all of the morning.

Saturday 26th September from 9.30 til 12.30 Tim Lang, (Northey Street City Farm) will facilitate a Food for All project workshop where we will
investigate what our communal food gardens will look like, what will we grow and how will we grow it.

Come and join in the fun.

By the way, remember our general members meeting is this Saturday, September 19th, 2009 (Mullum market day) at 2pm.

We will be at the garden from 10am pegging out, making signs, planting, watering, making compost, drinking cups of tea(or coffee) and having a chat.

Our next general meeting is this Saturday – 18th July at 2 pm. Lots happening so I hope to see you there. We are now getting some Food for All communal garden beds ready for spring so all hands on deck before the meeting would be appreciated. Come along any time after 11am.

Memberships are now due so please bring your membership form too. Membership forms and guidelines can be downloaded from the blog’s become a member page.

I am also aiming to have our Annual Report ready by Saturday after our AGM a couple of weeks ago.

Anyone interested in native bees might like to come along to Aracaria on Sunday 19th at 10am to hear Frank Adcott speak. Gold coin donation and bring food to share. We are aiming to encourage native bees at the garden so we are looking forward to learning lots. Aracaria is the Biodynamic farm on the right at the end of Yankee Creek Road off Left Bank Road, about a km from Shearwater. Kaye and I will be there. All are welcome.

As you are cleaning out your shed or under the house for the council’s hard rubbish collection over the next week or so, would you please look out for good quality recycled treasures that may be of use at the community garden.

We are currently seeking:

Good Quality colourbond or galvanised roofing iron

“ “ timber (preferably with nails removed)

“ “ garden tools

“ “ outdoor furniture

“ “ Stainless steel sink or troughs

Bath tubs (for worm farms)

“ “ Chicken wire

“ “ Star Pickets

“ “ Rocks

“ “ Tools and Equipment etc.

You may notice the common thread – Good quality. Although your donation may come from the heart, something broken may prove to be a hinderance rather than a help. Still if you find anything you think could be of benefit, please call me or Ed and Kirsten on 6684 3728 or bring it to the garden on Saturday.

Our general meeting is at 2pm and I will be there from 11am.

And by the way, if anyone has a spare shipping container lying around, we can certainly put one of those to use.
